Is National Park Krka Worth Visiting?

    written by Roman Robroek

In our last blog we talked about why you won’t regret visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia. This blog is about another National Park in Croatia: Krka (named after the river). National Park Krka covers an area of 111 km². The park has a very rich flora and fauna with nearly 900 different plant species and rare fish and a lot of birds. National Park Krka is definitely worth visiting, and we will tell you why.

We arrived around 8 in the morning at the well organised parking space of the park. Not a lot of tourists arrived yet at this time of the day which entering a relaxed experience. A friendly staff employee gave us instructions to walk towards the ticket box to buy an entrance ticket. After that you have the choice to take a bus to the entrance of the park or hike there. We chose the latter. It just adds up to the experience when you hike the road down towards the park instead of sitting in a bus, in our opinion. However, this road is quite exhausting and you need proper shoes to take it. Along the way you can rest at the multiple benches available to sit on. Once we arrived at the bottom of the road we were greeted by a footbridge. This is where our route starts.

Since there were barely any people in the park at this time of the day we took extra time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. This didn’t last very long. We kept on walking and about an hour after we arrived the park was getting rather busy. We arrived at the first panorama view of the amazing landscape and it was quite hard to find a spot to take a photo. However, the view is breathtaking and the colours in the water are lovely. Just like our visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park we brought our travel tripods to be able to take photos with a longer shutter time – producing a smooth effect in the flowing water.

The park consists of multiple parts and entrances, all easily accessible. Next to that the park offers you the possibility to also travel by boat, which is a great different experience. In general, the park has a lot to offer. There are several waterfalls, a cave and you can also visit Visovac (a small island with a beautiful monastery). During our visit, we took a tour along the waterfalls in the park. We were surprised to see that you were allowed to swim at the foot of the waterfalls, and people do that a lot. Take your swimming gear with you if you would like to hop in too! Don’t be afraid of the tiny fish in the water.

Continuing our route, we had to cross a bridge. This went very slowly since it was around midday and the park became very busy. It’s a lovely place to enjoy the weather in beautiful scenery, have something to eat and swim at the foot of a waterfall. Our route brought us very close to a large waterfall which was truly impressive.

We wanted to make another photo t show you the different heights in the landscape. One of us slipped (the wet rocks are slippery), but nevertheless we managed to reach the perfect spot.

Visiting National Park Krka is definitely recommended and it is worth visiting. The nature is very impressive, facilities are great and if you arrive early it will feel as if you have the park completely to yourself. While Plitvice Lakes National Park is a more well-known park in Croatia, National Park Krka is not less beautiful. In fact, there are a lot of similarities. You can easily spend a whole day in the park since there are many routes and there is a lot to do. Go for it.
